Julian Assange, the man behind Wikileaks, says he’s the victim of a US conspiracy to punish him for exposing alleged US war crimes. Assange set up Wikileaks in 2006 to expose secrets that he, and others, thought should be exposed, including alleged US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the US says the leaks broke the law and endangered lives. Assange had sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid deportation. He remained there for nearly 7 years until he was ejected and arrested. A UK district judge blocked his extradition after his lawyer told the court that the risk of suicide would be "imminent the moment extradition becomes likely". WikiLeaks, a website that publishes anonymously sourced documents, has released a video showing what apparently is a US military helicopter firing at unarmed civilians in Iraq. WikiLeaks said the footage, filmed from a helicopter cockpit, shows a missile strike and shooting on a square in a Baghdad neighbourhood in July 2007. The website said 12 civilians were killed in the attack, including two journalists, Namir Nour El Deen and Saeed Chmagh, who worked for the Reuters news agency. This is the full, unedited version of the footage.

The US has said that it was investigating the ongoing cyber attacks against the websites of companies that have cut ties with WikiLeaks, the Whistle-blowing website. In recent days, supporters of the website have hacked into the websites of companies like Mastercard, Visa, and Paypal after Wikileaks itself had become the victim of similar attacks. But as Nazanine Moshiri discovered, the secret to its survival lies deep underground in Sweden.
Wikileaks has obtained and decrypted this previously unreleased video footage from a US Apache helicopter in 2007. It shows Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen, driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others as the Apache shoots and kills them in a public square in Eastern Baghdad. They are apparently assumed to be insurgents. After the initial shooting, an unarmed group of adults and children in a minivan arrives on the scene and attempts to transport the wounded. They are fired upon as well. The official statement on this incident initially listed all adults as insurgents and claimed the US military did not know how the deaths ocurred. Britain has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States. That's where he's wanted on 18 criminal charges, including spying. Washington says Assange endangered lives by releasing troves of classified military records and diplomatic correspondence. Assange called Friday's decision a "dark day for press freedom and British democracy." He will appeal the decision at London's High Court. Comincia il racconto del camaleonte Assange, mai uguale a se stesso, in giro per il mondo e seguito per sei mesi dalle telecamere svedesi di Svt-Play tv. Julian è in lotta da tempo contro il "vecchio potere", lui stesso racconta le sue prime iniziative hacker quando si faceva chiamare "Mendax". Anche la Nasa fu tra i suoi obiettivi: lui viene indagato per degli attacchi informatici e, seppur assolto, si convince della necessità di portare avanti una battaglia a tutto campo per la trasparenza. Dalla creazione in Australia di una delle prime piattaforme informatiche per dibattiti online alla pubblicazione di documenti riservati della setta Usa Scientology, il passo che porta a Wikileaks, nel 2006, è breve. Poi è uno scoop dopo l'altro. Dai documenti sulla sottrazione di denaro pubblico da parte del governo keniota, al manuale di detenzione nella prigione di Guantanamo; dalle prove che la multinazionale Trafigura ha inondato di rifiuti tossici la Costa d'Avorio alle mail private di Sarah Palin che mostrano come la governatrice dell'Australia, violando la legge Usa sulla trasparenza, ha usato una mail privata per degli affari pubblici. Comincia così l'epopea Wikileaks che porta anche all'approvazione in Islanda della legge che rende l'isola "Il paradiso della libertà di stampa"
Depuis 2010 et les premières révélations de Wikileaks, la personnalité de Julian Assange, fondateur de l'organisation, est devenu un symbole aussi bien pour ses partisans que ses opposants. Pour les premiers, il a permis de révéler au monde des informations jusqu'ici restées secrètes portant sur des affaires d'Etat et des crimes de guerres. Pour les seconds, au premier rang desquels les États-Unis, il a transgressé les règles du "secret défense" en exposant par la même différentes administrations et dirigeants. Entre Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, Suède et Équateur, retour en vidéo sur plus de 10 années d'affaire Assange/Wikileaks qui se poursuit désormais en une bataille judiciaire à propos de l'extradition d'Assange, incarcéré depuis deux ans au Royaume-Uni.
