We use the 1977 Star Wars and the 1998 Japanese anime series, Cowboy Bebop, as product examples. We raise the questions: “What if you were hired to design for these projects? What would you do?” Follow along as we break down the design processes and explain the importance of each step. Thank you for watching. Digital painting is a broad term. Too many students tend to jump into Photoshop and attempt to emulate what they see online, without first understanding the fundamentals. In this episode, we focus on cinematic lighting. By treating photographic environments as physical film locations, we approach the image from a completely different mindset. Instead of thinking about how to paint, we focus on where to place stage lights. The lighting setup used in this episode is utilized by many Hollywood films. By placing a backlight behind the subject, it creates a silhouette that’s easy to read. For students who are learning, this process is less intimidating and places the emphasis on thinking rather than painting. When learning, it’s important to push yourself to finish projects and meet deadlines. In this episode, we break down a drawing into 3 manageable days and focuses on the importance of day 1. The goal is to find your design by the first day. This will bring down the overall stress level and give you plenty of time to add polish and details. Thank you for watching. Sketching is a process most designers use in the beginning stages of a project. It’s one of the fastest methods for idea exploration. With access to new media, we can further enhance this approach. Google Image Search, together with Pinterest, Flickr, etc., give us instant access to thousands of images. Instead of merely collecting these images for reference, we can use them directly in a technique I’d like to call, “sketching with photos.” Unlike photo-bashing, these photos are not meant to appear in the final image. Instead, we use these photos to “sketch.” Combining this method together with traditional sketching can help you find inspiration and discover fresh design directions. When learning, give yourself a design goal, set a realistic deadline and establish a consistent workflow. In this episode, we will be demonstrating these processes step by step. We will be taking the theme of “scientific research ship” and expanding it into several key frames. The first step always involves finding good references. Next, list out the design objectives and set a deadline. Third, use rough sketches to find the composition and initial design direction. Finally, do a mood and lighting pass by using photo-bashing to speed up the process. By following this production workflow, you will have a clear direction before committing to the final image. This will help you save time and frustration down the road. Thank you for watching and please subscribe to FZD School: 🤍 Visit FZD School: 🤍 Watch All Episodes of Design Cinema: 🤍
