October 1939 and Scotland saw the first Luftwaffe Air Raid of World War 2. On 3rd September 1939, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared war on Germany. Britain’s armed forces of soldiers, sailors and airmen were mobilised and sent to take on the might of the German war machine. The residents of Scotland could be forgiven for thinking that this war was taking place many miles from home but on 16th October 1939 they would be proved very wrong. On a bright Monday morning, the war arrived in Scotland on the Firth of Forth. The Firth of Forth has long been a safe port for the Royal Navy with the Naval Base and Dockyard at Rosyth on the north bank of the Forth. On 16th October, a reconnaissance mission of German Heinkel He111s thought they had spotted Battlecruiser HMS Hood in the estuary and a squadron of Junkers Ju 88 bombers were hastily armed and readied for flight. It was in fact HMS Repulse that had been spotted but the Junkers Ju88 bombers still attacked HMS Mohawk and HMS Southampton that were at anchor close to the Forth Bridge. Royal Auxiliary Air Force spitfires of 602 City of Glasgow Sqn and 603 City of Edinburgh Squadron stood in the way of what would become the very first time the Luftwaffe would attack Britain during World War 2. - Comments are always welcome and I try to respond to as many as possible. However, David Morris would be the man arrested for the families murders. Many in the community believe that this was a cover up and David was wrongly convicted as an innocent man. This theory is mainly believed due to the past actions of the South Wales Police in other cases of miscarriages of justice. Including the murder of newsagent Phillip Saunders when Darren Hall, Micheal O'Brien and Ellis Sherwood would be imprisoned for 11 years as the Cardiff Newsagent Three. Also, the murders of Diane Jones and her two daughters Shauna and Sarah Jane. Donna Clarke and Annette Hewins would be jailed for 3 years before being released. The most infamous however was the murder of Lynette Deborah White whose murder would lock up the Cardiff Three who were Stephen Miller, Tony Paris and Yusef Abdullahi. She was briefly an examination vessel before being requisitioned, and then commissioned as HMAS Forceful (pennant W126) on 16 February 1942.[3] She was initially attached to HMAS Leeuwin, the naval base at Fremantle, for general harbour and towing duties.[3] In October 1942 Forceful was transferred to the naval base HMAS Melville, at Darwin, Northern Territory as a harbour and salvage tug. During her war service she was based at Darwin. She operated there during a period when Darwin received repeated Japanese air attacks. On 4 November the tug rescued the crew of an American B-26 bomber which had ditched west of Bathurst Island after a raid on Dili and in 1943 regularly took up salvage readiness at sea in support of naval destroyers during Australian irregular military operations in Timor.[3] In April and May 1943 Forceful was based at Thursday Island in support of the strengthening of allied facilities at Merauke, New Guinea.[3] In August 1943 the tug returned from Darwin to Brisbane, where she was required as a harbour tug to assist the vastly increased volume of shipping. 04.05.1940 Rombaken fjord, near Narvik, Norway Polish destroyer GROM and destroyer FAULKNOR were on patrol off Narvik bombarding German positions when GROM was struck at 08;28 on her torpedo tubes by a German bomb. Destroyer GROM (Cdr A. Hulewicz ORP) was sunk in the explosion and her survivors were picked up by light cruiser ENTERPRISE, which lowered boats to rescue survivors at 08;35, destroyers FAULKNOR and BEDOUIN. This hatred was founded by the fact that the Grom took an intense interest in all hostile movements on shore and was reputed to spend hours lurking the coast in order to kill even a single German. On 4 May 1940, Grom carried out what turned out to be the last of her many Naval Gunfire Support missions in the Narvik area in the Rombaken fjord. Her loaded midship torpedo launcher was struck by a bomb from a German plane and the torpedo exploded, causing the hull to break into two parts and the ship to sink almost immediately with a loss of life of 59 sailors. 🤍
